Describe a happy family event that you remember well

Well, this is a very nice topic for me and I would love to talk about one of my most memorable childhood events that I had with my family. The celebration was to welcome a new member to our family, the birth of my  nephew . My eldest sister gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy and he was the first grandchild of my parents.

After seeing the newborn baby for the first time, my father  declared  that this was a really special occasion and that we must celebrate to welcome the newest member into our family. So we all got to work straight away organising and planning for the party, my parents set out to invite all the guests and do the necessary shopping while my grandmother and sister cooked a lot of delicious food.

I was so happy and excited that when the  gorgeous  baby arrived, I didn’t leave his side. I wanted to be near him and play with him all the time but he was still so small that he couldn’t play with any of the toys I had given him. But it didn’t really matter because I could just stare at his cute face all day long anyway.

It really was a day full of happiness,  amazement  and celebration. The arrival of a beautiful baby into the family had brought us all together. Many friends and relatives  turned up  for the occasion, and it was definitely a very happy event for our whole family, close friends and relatives.

Essay Ideas: Celebrations and Family

Happy New Year to those of you who celebrate New Year on January 1st. Here is an IELTS essay question relating to festivals and celebrations.

Most traditional festivals and celebrations are losing their meaning as they become more commercial with the emphasis on buying presents and spending money on parties. Some people think that traditional festivals are a waste of time and money. To what extent do you agree?

Always spend time thinking about the essay title and planning your answer. You should spend a minimum of 5 minutes thinking, analysing and planning before you start writing your essay. Here are some questions to help you consider the above essay.

Questions for Analysis

1. How do most people celebrate traditional festivals?

2. Do most people who spend money not recognise the meaning behind the festival?

3. Is it possible to spend lots of money on celebrations and still recognise their meaning?

4. Are people more interested in the traditional meaning of festivals or on having a good time  celebrating?

5. How important are traditional festivals in keeping a culture alive?

6. What would happen if we get rid of all traditional festivals?

7. Do you think the money spent on festivals could be better used?

Now plan how you will use your ideas to answer the question given in the IELTS essay question. After you have decided your plan, check the ideas below. Remember that there is no right or wrong in IELTS. These ideas offer one possible options for the content of body paragraphs.

Body Paragraph Content

Below is an example of body paragraph content for a partial agree essay ( a balanced view).

• Body Paragraph A: Many traditional festivals are becoming more commercial as people use them as an opportunity to treat themselves or others to expensive luxury goods.
• Body Paragraph B: This money could certainly be better used as it is not necessary to spend so much money to enjoy festivals and respect traditions.
• Body Paragraph C: Regardless of the commercial aspect that is developing around many festivals, they are still vitally important in keeping traditions alive and teaching the younger generation about their own culture.

Hi liz! Thank you so much for your valuable lessons. I just want to ask a question. What is meant by “national celebrations”? Are they only the national days that have historic backgrounds? Or do they also include other celebrations such as religious ones?

These questions and topic relate to the Speaking test. You are not marked on your understanding of the questions. So, this means, you can interpret the questions as you wish. Then allow the examiner to guide you if he or she wishes.

I have written a background statement and thesis statement for this essay using a balanced approach as described in one of your advanced lessons, please correct me if am wrong

In the modern era, festivals have become a commercial, where people are allowed to spend lavishly on gifts and get together and as a result, losing the importance of festivals. In my opinion, celebrating festivals in this way is a waste of time and money and therefore, should only be celebrated to help poor and to keep the traditions alive

You have the right technique. But avoid using “in the modern era”. Your English is good enough that you should not depend on learned phrases that are used by thousands of other students. Avoid phrases.

Madam if I disagree and want to give a balace view. The structure Bp1- Due to festivals people meet with each other and share their common thoughts.So it is a good way to become socialise with relatives and friends in todays busy world. Bp2- Traditional ceremonies are our cultural identity and makes us feel that we are a part of the community. Bp3- Presently the economic status of people is improving and due to effect of other modern cultures people are now spending on presents and decorations in a festival.I think it is a way to greet each other and to celebrate the event in a grand manner. Kindly suggest whether the above ideas are relevant or not. Thanks Regards

Hi Liz Thanks for your reply , yes I got your writing essays and the video , it’s phenomenal, my problem I get excited and I keep going with my ideas leaving the plan in one side and never stick to limited words number , I guess a part of my problem is more writing as a result will make more slips , I need to think simple Your essay is so simple and clear , my mistake is I think they are testing my knowledge , I will stick to what you say and appreciate all the helping hands , wishing you a wonderful weekend.

I think you’ve highlighted two very important points. 1) If you don’t plan your WHOLE essay carefully, you will run over with ideas and your essay will become longer and longer. Your plan is about selecting the best ideas and planning two or three supporting points. When you start writing, you will know the content for almost every sentences. This allows you to focus on accuracy with English when writing. Planning is essential !! 2) Your knowledge is not tested in speaking or writing. In your essay, you don’t get a higher score because your ideas are better or because your knowledge is stronger. You get points for being: – relevant – focused – developed ideas (with highly relevant supporting points) – on topic (not just the main topic but the issues directly addressed that are in the essay question)

In that body paragraph C : Can we say’ important for keeping ‘ or it will be marked wrong ? I find it hard to predict whish preposition i should use sometimes..

Sure – it’s fine to write that. In English, it is sometimes possible that more than one preposition is possible.

Dear Liz, As an IELTs tutor, and indeed as someone who has recommended your site to my students, I am concerned by the number of errors in your posts. It is so easy to make typographical errors and so it is important to check anything that is posted. As an example read through Body paragraph C! keep should be keeping and generator should be generation.

I appreciate you helping me proof read as I don’t always have time or I miss typos. However, I don’t appreciate your negativity. I consider it rude, ungrateful and unprofessional. Teachers should never speak in such a way to other teachers – NEVER. And doctors should know better than to ooze negativity over other people, particularly those who are seriously sick, housebound and in frequent pain – or didn’t you know that about me? As both a teacher and a doctor you should be ashamed of your comment and your attitude. Students learn not only subject content from a teacher but much more. I hope my students learn positive thinking as well as respect and kindness for others. My whole website is based on kindness and supportive comments. You seem to teach a condescending, patronising attitude with an unprofessional manner. Not a good role model. You don’t pay for my lessons so I suggest you and your students find another website to follow.

The most you can do is prepare ideas for common topics: https://ieltsliz.com/100-ielts-essay-questions/ and make note of trending current topics: http://www.ieltsliz.com/recent-ielts-questions-and-topics . IELTS often use the similar topics but phrase the questions differently.

I think there is a typo. Younger ‘generator’ should be younger ‘generation’.

Is it necessary to have a third body para if we are partially agreeing? Or is it OK to write two body paras if we are agreeing or disagreeing or partially agreeing?

It’s fine to have only two body paragraphs. You decide if you want two or three after you have brainstormed and selected your main points.

Sorry i have a strange question . In the first paragraph you wrote ‘a opportunity’ not ‘an opportunity’ . I have seen a similar wording in a reading passage and i thought it’s a mistake.

Is it a mistake ? I think it is but i am not sure now as you used the same proposition.

Although,the cultural festivals are one of the best reason for celebrating in each year along with the friends and family,some people say that it is the waste of money and time as well.While i agree with this statement,i believe that there is another ways we could celebrate the festivals.

IELTS Speaking topic: A family celebration

Describe a family celebration (such as wedding) that you attended. You should say: when and where this celebration was held what you did in this celebration who was there and explain why this celebration was held.

The last time we celebrated was in the National Day when it came to my son’s birthday, on October 3rd. We threw a party to celebrate his 4-year-old birthday, and all of our relatives in Beijing took a part in the celebration.

This meal was really a big banquet. We booked a room in a restaurant and decorated it with some flowers and balloons hanging on the wall. Then we prepared a big birthday cake and some other tasty foods like salads, biscuits and fruit juice. Besides as for adults we had some delicacies like Gong Bao Chicken, Simmer Meat, Roasted Duck. And we had noodles as our staple food because in China, long noodles are traditionally eaten by person celebrating his birthday.

I invited all my relatives to come to dinner mainly because I wanted to strengthen the family bonding between us. Besides, it was a desirable opportunity to teach son how to share his happiness and especially, how to interact with others. On top of that, admittedly, we just would like to sit down together and enjoy the tasty food.

Celebrations are the basic part of individual’s life in this world. Whenever there is something to be happy upon, human beings try to celebrate it in different forms. It can be either in the form of decorating houses, and then a get together with friends and family, music and dancing and eating variety of delicious foods. Family traditions are experiences or activities that are passed down between generations. These traditions can be as unique and special as the family itself. In addition to being something to look forward to, traditions also establish a foundation for family values and serve as special bonding experiences .

Traditions can provide families with a sense of identity and belonging. They can inspire positive feelings and memories that family members can share. Family traditions also provide a sense of continuity across generations. They are a way of transferring the family's values, history, and culture from one generation to the next.

Here are a few family traditions that you can adapt for your family or use as fodder for developing your own unique ideas.

• Volunteer each spring in the annual community cleanup.
• Cook hamburgers on the grill on Saturdays during the summer.
• Take a silly family selfie during summer vacation each year.
• Buy food for the local food pantry once a month and deliver it together.
• Have a bonfire to celebrate the last day of school.
• Serve in a local soup kitchen together once a month.
• Go apple picking or visit a pumpkin patch each fall.
• Have a particular food on a set day each week, such as brunch on Sunday, breakfast for dinner on Friday, or tacos on Tuesday.
• Build a fire and make hot chocolate on the first day of winter.
• Go on a maple syrup hike each winter.
• Organize a family book club.
• Take part in an annual fitness challenge as a family.
• Go on a family walk or bike ride every Sunday afternoon.
• Watch the sunrise together on the first day of summer and the sunset on the last day of summer break.
• Plan a regular family game night and play board games together.

Here are some winter holiday traditions to choose or adapt for your family.

• Give everyone a new set of pajamas and take a family photo in your matching PJs .
• Give each child a board game or puzzle and play the games or assemble the puzzles together as a family.
• Watch a seasonal movie each Thanksgiving, like "Home Alone," "Die Hard," "Elf," or "The Grinch."
• Cook a meal together as a family on your family's special holiday.
• Make fun and creative Leprechaun traps for St. Paddy's Day.
• Get hot chocolate and watch a community tree lighting ceremony.
• Tour your community to look at the light displays on homes or businesses.
• Host a family or neighborhood cookie exchange.
• Assemble care packages for family members who are away during the holidays.
• Write heartfelt letters to family members you can't spend time with during the holidays.
• Host a white elephant gift exchange.
• Attend a holiday performance or concert each year, such as the "Nutcracker," the local symphony, or Trans Siberian Orchestra.
• Get a new piece of holiday-related decor, like a Christmas ornament , each year, or make an ornament to commemorate the past year.

Family Routines vs. Traditions

Family traditions differ from everyday family routines, which also occur repeatedly, but lack the symbolic meaning that family rituals hold. While family traditions carry a special significance for all family members involved, family routines are often basic activities that are necessary to keep the family unit functioning. A family dinner on Friday night may be part of the family routine, for example, whereas a family dinner at a favorite restaurant for Mom's birthday may be a tradition.

Many families have traditions that endure for generations. These special activities or events often generate fond memories that everyone cherishes and attempts to carry on. Some traditions relate to the family's heritage, like going to a cultural festival or cooking a meal from the "old country" on a certain day each year. Others may have to do with special events, such as a pearl necklace that is passed down at each wedding. Still others are simply fun activities that family members enjoy repeating.

For instance, a family full of baseball fans may make it a tradition to go to the stadium on opening day. This tradition may have started with great-grandpa and continues to involve the youngest members of the family, becoming something they look forward to every year.

People create and maintain family traditions because they bring meaning to celebrations and foster special bonds. More importantly, traditions create positive experiences and memories for everyone by nurturing a family's connection and giving them a sense of belonging.

Family traditions also help children understand who they are and what is important to the family to which they belong. Traditions create a connection for children that comes from feeling like they are part of something unique and extraordinary. Family traditions can even contribute to a child's self-esteem and enhance their well-being. After all, children find comfort and security when things are predictable and consistent.

Benefits of Family Traditions

• Make memories for families that last a lifetime
• Provide children a sense of security by providing continuity
• Give family members a strong sense of belonging
• Help pass on family values including cultural and religious heritage
• Keep generations connected and give them a family history to share

Establishing and maintaining family traditions is a way for families to bond over shared experiences—a way for them to connect to one another and to their past. But keeping family traditions going takes some commitment and planning. While most people look forward to the stability and predictability that comes with repeating the same activities each year, it also can be daunting if the family traditions are highly involved, overly expensive, or require a lot of planning.

When you are creating your own family traditions, try to keep them simple. Think about playing games, sharing special recipes, going on a hike, seeing a performance, and so on. These simpler traditions are more likely to be repeated and carried on. Likewise, your traditions do not need to cost a lot of money. There are plenty of ways for families to bond without spending money.

When creating new family traditions for your family, it's also important to be open to trying things out and then scrapping them if they don't work. If you schedule a visit to see the lights display at the zoo thinking it could become a fun tradition, but it turns out to be a miserable experience (say, because the weather doesn't cooperate or your child's allergies kick in), it's OK to scrap the idea and do something else next year.

You don't want to repeat an activity over and over just because it sounds good. The goal of a family tradition is that everyone has fun and looks forward to repeating it year after year.

When most people think of family traditions, they naturally think of holiday traditions first, such as those surrounding Kwanzaa , Christmas, Hanukkah, or Ramadan. Events surrounding these holidays, like picking out a Christmas tree, lighting the candles on the menorah or kinara, and gathering for dinner with extended family can become regular traditions.

But families can also have non-holiday rituals that are unique to them. Apple picking every fall or renting a vacation home every summer are two good examples. Some families also may have family traditions for every member's birthday.

Family traditions may even be as ordinary as baking a special cake that is the birthday celebrant's personal favorite or going to dinner at their favorite restaurant. It may also be something funny or an inside family joke that becomes a tradition on everyone's birthday.

To create traditions for your family, think about things that your family enjoys doing and build upon those things.

Keep in mind too, that family traditions sometimes just form on their own. Some of the best family traditions happen by accident—you do something on a whim and the entire family loves it and wants to repeat it again. Before you know it, you have created a family tradition.

Traditions that are formed by accident are often the easiest to repeat year after year because the family looks forward to it. But if you're looking for ideas on family traditions that you can incorporate into your family's life, here are some additional ideas.

Social distancing and stay-at-home guidelines put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic may have made it hard to honor some family traditions, but it also became a good time to start new ones. Those virtual game nights and Zoom family visits can become a tradition that lasts well after the pandemic is over and strengthens your bonds with family near and far.

A Word From Verywell

Family traditions don't have to be formal, nor do they have to cost money. All that is required to create a new family tradition is something meaningful to your family and a little creativity. Additionally, family traditions do not have to revolve around the holidays. You can create family traditions for just about any time of year. Simply look for ways for your family to spend time together doing something they enjoy.
