Psychology is the study of the biological, cognitive, emotional and social processes related to human and animal behavior. Using scientific methods to study, explain and predict behavior, psychologists explore such questions as how the brain learns and stores information; what triggers our biological rhythms, aggression and personality characteristics; how human relationships develop; what leads to judgment and decision making; how society deals with mental illness and behavioral disorders; and the psychological impact of activities such as work and sports.

Get started

Upon admission to the university, students can declare a major in psychology within the College of Arts and Sciences. Students may choose to pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science.

The psychology major consists of 36 credit hours of psychology courses and a prerequisite course, Introduction to Psychology.

Course work for the psychology major includes:

  • Data Analysis in Psychology
  • Research Methods in Psychology
  • A core course from each of four areas: brain and behavior, cognitive psychology, clinical and development psychology, and social psychology

In addition, students must take at least two advanced courses.

Students completing a BS degree must also take Quantitative and Statistical Methods in Psychology, and an advanced research course (Cognitive Psychology Laboratory or Social Psychology Laboratory).

Students may participate in community-based internship experiences at settings such as Suicide Prevention Services, Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio, Northwest Counseling Services, the American Red Cross, Goodwill of Columbus, COSI, the Student Wellness Center and Northwestern Mutual Financial Services.

Honors and Scholars

The Department of Psychology offers unique and challenging opportunities for Honors students. There are over 10 psychology Honors courses at both introductory and advanced levels. Students also may choose to design and implement their own research project via the Honors thesis track.

Many psychology majors are also involved in Ohio State’s Scholars programs, and students in the Health Sciences Scholars , Mount Leadership Society , Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars , and  International Affairs Scholars  programs often choose psychology as a major.

Students can become involved in faculty research labs as early as their freshman year. Psychology faculty and graduate students offer over 50 research opportunities for interested students. Each year, 600–700 students earn course credit for research experience through the Undergraduate Research in Psychology course. Students may present a poster of their research at the annual Psychology Research Colloquium, the Denman Research Forum, or can travel to a regional, national or international conference.

The department’s faculty are among the top researchers in areas such as stereotyping and prejudice, stress and breast cancer recovery, language development, Alzheimer’s, and schizophrenia.

Our PhD students are expected to conduct research and to advance the science of counseling psychology through scholarly inquiry. You’ll learn how to apply your scientific knowledge using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Our program, which is accredited by the American Psychological Association through 2029, will prepare you to work as a counseling psychologist in a variety of settings, including universities, hospitals, mental health clinics and private practice.

Note: Due to pending and recent retirements, and funding restrictions that prevent post baccalaureate students from serving as teaching assistants, most faculty will not consider admitting students for 2024 and into the Fall 2024 semester who do not already have a master’s degree.

For an academic year (nine month) appointment for 2023, stipends are $15,000 for 50% time assistantships and $9,900 for 33% time assistantships.

The following table indicates the type of support given to each cohort of students for the 2022-23 academic year. Assistantships are allocated based on availability of positions, with priority given to first year students, then second year students, and then third year. Students in the counseling psychology program have successfully applied for assistantships in other schools and colleges. After the third year in the program, students are strongly encouraged to seek assistantships through faculty grants or off-campus sources.

Properly Write Your Degree

The correct way to communicate your degree to employers and others is by using the following formats:

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Double Majors - You will not be receiving two bachelor's degrees if you double major. Your primary major determines the degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). If you're not fully sure which of your majors is primary, check CheckMarq or call the registrar's office.

Example: Primary Major: Psychology ; Secondary Major: Marketing
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Marketing

Primary Major: Marketing ; Secondary Major: Psychology

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing & Psychology

In a letter, you may shorten your degree by writing it this way:

  • In May 20XX, I will graduate with my Bachelor's degree in International Affairs.
  • In December 20XX, I will graduate with my Master's degree in Counseling Education.

College of Nursing’s Master of Science ranked #1 among public institutions

U.S. News & World Report also ranked the college’s DNP among the nation’s top 20 again

U.S. News & World Report ’s 2024 graduate nursing program rankings released today place The Ohio State University College of Nursing’s traditional Master of Science (MS) program tops among public institutions in the nation, and the college’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program again ranked among the country’s top 20.

The college’s in-person MS program ranked #4 overall – up from eighth last year – and #1 among public colleges of nursing. This is the sixth straight year for the MS degree program to rank among the nation’s top ten. Four specialties under the MS program also ranked highly, including several judged as best-in-class among public institutions:

  • Adult Primary Care NP: #2 overall (#1 public)
  • Family NP: #2 overall (#1 public)
  • Adult Acute Care NP: #5 overall (#1 public)
  • Psychiatric Mental Health NP: #6 overall (#2 public)

The college’s DNP program places #19 in the new rankings (#11 among public institutions), the degree’s sixth consecutive year among the nation’s top 20. U.S. News & World Report spotlighted three specialties for excellence:

  • Leadership: #4 overall (#1 public)
  • Family NP: #6 overall (#2 public)
  • Adult Gerontology Primary Care: #6 overall (#3 public)

“Every day, our students, faculty, staff, alumni, preceptors and partners answer a calling to care that makes a difference in peoples’ lives. And every day, they inspire me with their passion, purpose, grace and determination,” said Karen Rose , PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN, dean and professor at the College of Nursing. “Our degree program rankings are a direct reflection of how we strive to educate, empower, prepare and motivate students to be the best evidence-based clinicians they can be so they can change healthcare for the better.”

“The strength of our academic programs lies in the innovation of our brilliant faculty, the drive of our students and the support of partners who share relevant knowledge and skills-building in the course of care,” said Becky Lorenz , PhD, RN, senior associate dean for academic affairs and educational innovation and associate professor at the College of Nursing. “The confidence that this confluence of expertise builds in our students is invaluable so that they can be ready to provide high-quality care and transform healthcare in the process.”

In February 2024, U.S. News & World Report unveiled rankings for online nursing programs that placed the College of Nursing’s online MS program #4, online Family Nurse Practitioner specialization #2 and the university’s online bachelor’s programs (for which the college’s RN to BSN comprises the highest enrollment) #7. In September 2023, the college’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) ranked #4 overall and tied for #1 among public institutions.

The first Master of Arts degree in Psychology was awarded in 1915; the first Ph.D. in 1917. Since that time, about 2,800 master's degrees and 2,000 doctorates have been conferred.
